How we calculate
Annual amounts for the tax year shown, from KeptOffer's rule registry: Registry US v1.0.0 · reviewed 2026-09-30 · sources: IRS, SSA, FTB, EDD, NY DTF, NY Paid Family Leave. Each rate and threshold links to the official source on the methodology page. This is what you owe for the year, not what payroll withholds from each payslip, which can differ month to month.
A worked example
The calculator starts with a single filer earning $110,000 in Texas, which has no state income tax. The federal standard deduction of $16,100 comes off first, leaving $93,900 of taxable income: $12,400 at 10% ($1,240), $38,000 at 12% ($4,560), $43,500 at 22% ($9,570). Federal income tax is $15,370.
FICA is charged on the whole salary: Social Security at 6.2% ($6,820) up to the $184,500 wage base, and Medicare at 1.45% ($1,595) with no cap.
Take-home is $86,215 a year, $7,185 a month. The same salary keeps $78,800 in California and $76,555 in New York City. Of the next $1,000 in Texas you keep $704.
Five salaries side by side
| Salary | Take-home / year | Per month | Kept | Kept of the next 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $42,355 | $3,530 | 84.7% | 80% |
| $75,000 | $61,593 | $5,133 | 82.1% | 70% |
| $110,000 | $86,215 | $7,185 | 78.4% | 70% |
| $150,000 | $113,791 | $9,483 | 75.9% | 68% |
| $250,000 | $183,182 | $15,265 | 73.3% | 66% |
Above $184,500 Social Security stops, which is why the last column rises at the top. Above $200,000 the 0.9% Additional Medicare tax starts.
How we calculate
- Federal brackets and the $16,100 / $32,200 standard deduction for 2026 (IRS 2026 inflation adjustments).
- Social Security 6.2% up to $184,500 (SSA contribution and benefit base), Medicare 1.45%, plus 0.9% over $200,000 single or $250,000 joint.
- 401(k) deferrals up to $24,500 (plus $8,000 at 50+) reduce income tax but not FICA (IRS 2026 limits). Pre-tax health premiums through a cafeteria plan reduce both.
- California: FTB rate schedule, the California standard deduction and personal exemption credit, 1% extra over $1 million, and SDI at 1.3% of all wages (FTB, EDD). New York: 2026 rates, the recapture above $107,650, NYC tax and Paid Family Leave (NY DTF). See California and New York.
Every rate is listed with its source on the methodology page. California's 2026 brackets are published late in the year, so 2025 FTB brackets are used until then and the result says so.
What this does not include
- States other than California, New York, Texas and Florida (more are coming), and local taxes outside New York City.
- Head of household status, itemized deductions, credits such as the Child Tax Credit, and the 2025–2028 deductions for overtime and tips.
- Paycheck withholding. Your W-4 and supplemental withholding on bonuses can make each paycheck differ from this annual figure; the difference comes back, or is owed, at filing.
Questions people ask
How much is $100,000 after tax?
For a single filer in 2026: $79,180 in Texas or Florida, $72,825 in California and $70,525 in New York City, before any 401(k).
Does a 401(k) reduce my taxes?
It reduces federal and state income tax, not Social Security or Medicare. Putting $10,000 into a 401(k) on $110,000 in Texas lowers take-home from $86,215 to $78,415: the $10,000 costs you $7,800 of spending money.
Why doesn't this match my paycheck?
Payroll withholds an estimate each pay period using your W-4. This page shows what you owe for the whole year. Bonuses are often withheld at a flat 22%, which can be more or less than you finally owe.
What is the Additional Medicare Tax?
An extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). Employers start withholding it at $200,000 whatever your filing status.
