How we calculate
Annual amounts for the tax year shown, from KeptOffer's rule registry: Registry CA v1.0.0 · reviewed 2026-09-30 · sources: CRA. Each rate and threshold links to the official source on the methodology page. This is what you owe for the year, not what payroll withholds from each payslip, which can differ month to month.
A worked example
The calculator starts with a $95,000 salary in Ontario for 2026. CPP takes $4,230, CPP2 $416 and EI $1,123, all at their annual maximums. The enhanced part of CPP and all of CPP2 are deductible, so taxable income is $93,873.
Federal tax before credits is $58,523 at 14% ($8,193), $35,350 at 20.5% ($7,247). Credits at 14% for the basic personal amount, the Canada employment amount, base CPP and EI bring federal tax down to $12,277. Ontario tax including surtax is $5,489, plus the Ontario Health Premium of $750.
Take-home is $70,714 a year, $5,893 a month. Of the next $1,000 you keep $704.
Five salaries side by side
| Salary | Take-home / year | Per month | Kept | Kept of the next 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $40,145 | $3,345 | 80.3% | 75% |
| $75,000 | $56,926 | $4,744 | 75.9% | 68% |
| $95,000 | $70,714 | $5,893 | 74.4% | 70% |
| $150,000 | $104,320 | $8,693 | 69.5% | 57% |
| $250,000 | $156,546 | $13,045 | 62.6% | 50% |
The kept share of the next $1,000 jumps around because CPP stops at $74,600, CPP2 at $85,000 and EI at $68,900, while the federal and Ontario brackets and the Ontario surtax start at different points.
How we calculate
- Federal brackets for 2026 starting at 14%, the basic personal amount of $16,452 (reduced above $181,440) and the Canada employment amount of $1,501 (CRA T4032ON, January 2026).
- CPP 5.95% between $3,500 and $74,600, CPP2 4% up to $85,000, EI 1.63% up to $68,900 (CRA CPP, CRA CPP2, CRA EI). Base CPP is a credit; the enhanced 1% and CPP2 are deductions (CRA: the CPP enhancement).
- Ontario 2026 brackets from 5.05%, the Ontario basic personal amount of $12,989, the surtax (20% of Ontario tax over $5,818 plus 36% over $7,446), the low-income tax reduction and the Ontario Health Premium of up to $900.

- Other credits (tuition, medical, dependants) and RRSP contributions made outside payroll, which you deduct when you file.
- Payroll withholding per pay period, which uses the CRA's tables and can differ slightly from the annual amount.
